Here are responses to the questionnaires answered by designers in Cape Town:

  • Name: Victoria Gabler

Please state your agency and Position: DraftFCB (Cape Town), Project Manager

1. What in your opinion does South African design evoke?
Unity, Emotion, Strength

  • Name: Bruce Farthing

Please state your agency name and position: Omada Studios (Cape Town), Creative Director and Co founder

1. What in your opinion does South African design evoke?

With the work we do we tend to follow global trends as some of our clients are foreign. We tend not to brand our work with a South African feel. More industrial and product orientated local design does tend to be very “African” and I feel gives a sense of adventure, simplicity and a break from the less organic current design trends.

  • Name: Al Luke

Please state your agency name and position: Blacksheep Design Studio (Cape Town), Art Director

1. What in your opinion does South African design evoke?
Originality, Passion and a desire to set trends not seen anywhere else.

South African designers are constantly approached to boost creativity in many international agencies due to the strength and quality of their design.

  • Name: Gina Wood

Please state your agency and Position: Jeep Apparel (Durban), Graphic Artist

1. What in your opinion does South African design evoke?
1. SOUTH AFRICA IS SUCH A DIVERSE COUNTRY. IT IS FILLED WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT LANGUAGES AND CULTURES AND THIS TAKES A HUGE PART IN OUR DESIGN. SOUTH AFRICAN DESIGN IS AN ECLECTIC MERGING OF ALL OF THESE BOLD CONTRASTS TO FROM A MEDIUM THAT WILL RELATE TO ALL PARTS OF OUR DIVERSE RAINBOW NATION. IT NEEDS TO REACH A VERY WIDE TARGET AUDIENCE SO IT PROUDLY UTILIZES THIS DIVERSITY. BEEN A DESIGNER IS NOT ONLY ABOUT TRYING TO EVOKE EMOTION FROM THE AUDIENCE IT IS ABOUT TRYING TO CREATE A REACTION OUT OF THEM AND SOUTH AFRICAN DESIGN TO ME WORKS OFF OUR PATRIOTISM AND OUR MULTI-FACETED SOCIETY TO GET THIS REACTION AND EMOTION FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN AUDIENCE.

  • Metcalfe, I. 2009 [Personal communication] August 6 2009:

UK “there is definitely a young and fresh design spirit but no European design trend”

“‘Africanism’ here” (in South Africa)

“British design doesn’t seem to be anything specifically British, however there is quite a strong emphasis here on South African culture. Everyone is African here, whether black or white, whereas in the UK there is no particular strong identity on what is British. This may be a good thing and perhaps we are at a different level, but then this may be a bad thing in that people just don't care.”

These are responses from course mates who had design placements in England:

  • Name: Alex Bucktin

Please state the agency you worked at:
The Gild (Exposure) and The One Off - both london based

1. What in your opinion does British design evoke?
Variety and diversity. British design goes through phases, like fashion. I really like the 1940’s style of design - very clean and crisp. British design is about being multicultural but still having a traditional style and quality

  • Name: Hannah Lloyd,

  • Name: Rhianne Withers

Please state the agency you worked at: Tag Pac (UK)

1. What in your opinion does British design evoke?
I think that British design challenges common conventions where it can yet I think that the smaller agencies are more innovative than bigger agencies. I feel that bigger agencies are more concerned more about money and tight deadlines than creative new ideas. I think international countries such as netherlands and amsterdam are intriguing?
